BEING EMPOWERED

Asha grew up in a poor family in the Old City of Jaipur, and left school in the fifth grade. When she was 8 years old, she joined her mother to work in a factory doing embroidery and quilting. It was a difficult life for a child, and she worked long hours.

Asha got married and gave birth to three daughters, all of which were emergency caesareans. Complications during the birth of her third child left her in a coma in the hospital for six days. Asha had to take a loan to pay for the medical bills from the hospital. Asha's husband was unable to work due to a heart condition, and they had limited means for paying for food, school fees and now for paying back their loan.

Working at PDKF has meant that Asha can have a regular income for her family. She has paid most of her debts, has managed to send all her daughters to school and the eldest is now in college. Asha's focus is now to save money, to be able to afford their weddings.

"I look forward to coming to work. Badal Mahal is so peaceful, quiet and safe compared to the hustle and bustle of the Old City." Asha has felt encouraged and inspired by her work at PDKF. "I am more confident and feel blessed to have an income and meaningful work." Asha is proud of her achievements and feels empowered.
